The PADI Divemaster training develops your leadership abilities by training you to supervise dive activities and assist instructors with student divers. You’ll expand your dive knowledge and refine your skills as you develop into a PADI dive professional.
Scuba Divers look up to Divemasters because they are leaders who mentor and motivate others. As a Divemaster, you not only get to dive a lot, but also experience the joy of seeing others have as much fun diving as you do.
The PADI Divemaster course is your first level of professional training. With Poole Diving we encourage you to work with a variety of PADI Instructors, you’ll fine-tune your dive skills that perfect hover, the faultless skills, and anticipation to stop or easily solve common problems. You’ll gain dive knowledge, management and supervision abilities so you become a role model to divers.
As a PADI Divemaster, you’ll lead others as you supervise scuba diving activities and assist with diver training. Whether you want to work at a faraway dive destination or close to home, the adventure of a lifetime awaits you. PADI Divemasters are respected dive professionals who are aligned with the largest and most respected dive organization in the world – PADI.
What Can I do as a Divemaster?
After becoming certified as a PADI Divemaster you will be authorised to:
- Supervise both training and non-training-related activities by planning, organizing and directing dives
- Assist a PADI Instructor during the training sessions for any PADI Diver course
- Conduct the PADI Skin Diver course and PADI Discover Snorkeling program
- Conduct the PADI Discover Local Diving experience
- Conduct the PADI Scuba Review program
- If qualified as a Discover Scuba Diving Leader, independently conduct the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program
- Earn the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty Instructor rating to be able to teach the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer specialty.
- Independently guide Open Water Diver course students on the tour portion of Open Water Diver course Training Dives 2, 3 and 4 at a ratio of two student divers per certified divemaster.
- Accompany Open Water Diver students under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor during:
- surface swims to and from the entry/exit point and during navigational exercises
- when the instructor conducts a skill, such as an ascent or descent, a Divemaster can remain with other student divers (with an individual student or buddy team)
- Accompany student divers during Adventure Dives or Specialty training dives under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor.
- Conduct the PADI Seal Team Skin Diver Specialist AquaMission
- Conduct subsequent dives under an instructor’s indirect supervision for Discover Scuba Diving participants after participants have satisfactorily completed the first dive with a PADI Instructor.
- Teach Emergency First Response courses after successfully completing an Emergency First Response Instructor course.
Complete your PADI Divemaster with us and we will offer the PADI Discover Scuba Diving Leader Program on Internship FREE, you only pay your application fees to PADI on completion.
What Do I need to start
- PADI Rescue Diver certification (or equivalent from another organisation)
- Medical declaration signed by a GP
- Be a minimum of 18 years old
- Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care training within the past 24 is needed but can be completed with us first.
What You Learn
Through on-line learning, knowledge development sessions, waterskills exercises and workshops, and hands-on practical assessment, you develop the skills to organize and direct a variety of scuba diving activities, and you will put this knowledge into action through a structured internship by choice. Topics and practical workshops include:
- The role and characteristics of the PADI Divemaster
- Supervising dive activities and assisting with student divers
- Diver safety and risk management
- Divemaster conducted programs and specialized skills
- Business of diving and your career
- Awareness of the dive environment
- Dive setup and management
- Mapping an open water site
- Conducting dive briefings
- Organizing a search and recovery project and a deep dive
- Conducting a scuba review and skin diver course
- Assisting with Discover Scuba Diving and leading Discover Local Diving programs
We like all our candidates to have or take the PADI Deep Diver and Search and Recovery Diver during their time with us. These additional two modules help you, during training, to meet all requirements and broaden your abilities, and employability, following certification.
Equipment
As a dive professional, you’ll want to have all your own basic scuba equipment. During practical skills exercises, like underwater mapping and search and recovery, you’ll use a compass, floats, marker buoys, lift bags and slates. Your PADI Instructors may suggest, or you may decide on additional gear that will be useful throughout your diving career.
We will work with you and the equipment you have to work as a dive professional.
We do insist that all equipment used is serviced and tested in line with manufacturer’s recommendations at the very least. We can service and maintain virtually every piece of kit you have, on site, if needed.
Getting Started
Here at Poole Diving we really like to do this course in an intern style. This means they are rarely scheduled as a course on the calendar. However we work with you to create a schedule that works for you and were possible it will be working with real students.

How long will the Course Take
As with any PADI course, the Divemaster course is performance based. The length of time it takes to complete depends very much upon each individual candidate and your time availability.
The Divemaster Course can be completed in just a few weeks, but with us, we encourage you to spend the time developing yourself working with and shadowing our experienced team on real courses with real students. Complete an apprenticeship in the role in real life so once you complete you already have experience for your C.V.
